Worm Charming

As part of our work about minibeasts and habitats the children went out to the school field armed with an array of items for worm charming.

The children worked in four groups.  Groups 1 were charming with brooms.  Group 2 used musical instruments. Group 3 bounced tennis balls on the ground and Group 4 put garden trowels in the ground and banged them with sticks.

The children had 1 meter square in which to charm the wormsDSCF3503 DSCF3502 DSCF3501 DSCF3500 DSCF3499 DSCF3498 DSCF3497 DSCF3496 DSCF3495 DSCF3494 DSCF3493 DSCF3492 DSCF3491 DSCF3490 DSCF3489.

The largest worm was 15cm and smallest 4 cm.  Every group managed to charm worms from the ground.

The children had a fantastic day walking to America Wood.  They learned about various habitats, animals and plants. On  the way we stopped to talk about the fields, the pond, the marsh and the wood itself.  The children used an eight point compass and followed a route on a map to get to the wood.  They sketched the pond, did some bark rubbing and found minibeasts.  They also collected natural objects to make their wind chimes.

They walked around the whole wood and really enjoyed experiencing the mud of which there was plenty.
