Light-up cards

Year 4 worked very hard in the last few days of term, in pulling together all of their knowledge of electronics to produce a light-up card. They used their knowledge of electrical circuits to complete one, which would, when a certain part of the card was pressed, allow a light to glow on the front of their cards. It proved a little tricky a times, as the copper tape was very delicate and would tear very easily. The children persisted in order to complete their designs and everyone managed to achieve their aim. Everyone was very pleased with their efforts and rightly so, well done Year 4 .

Finishing our snowmen

Year 4 have been completing their snowmen, by sewing the scarves, drawing smiling faces on and giving them arms and hands in which to wave with. They look amazing Year 4 and you have used many skills in which to assemble your snowmen. Very well done.

Electrical circuits

What a busy afternoon we had in Year 4, making electrical circuits. The children had to use previous work and plans in order to make a complete circuit using wires, batteries and light bulbs. The lesson focused on adding switches to our circuits and everyone was able to add a switch and make the bulb light up. Great job Year 4!

Art skills day

Today Year 4 have made a 3D snowman decoration. We started the day by making our snowmen out of scrunched newspaper. After covering them in white crepe paper and paint, we looked at creating a top hat out of paper. We needed accurate cutting, folding and taping skills. In the afternoon we started sewing our scarves out of coloured fabric. This proved a little tricky but the class persevered very well. Super job Year 4!

Anti-bullying Week

During Anti-Bullying week, we have been having lots of super discussions around what bullying is, what form it takes and how it effects people. We have been looking at how we can control our emotions and each day have been taking part in Yogabugs, which helps with breathing techniques and positive thinking around ourselves.

Picasso style

Year 4 have produced amazing pictures in the style of the Spanish artist Pablo Picasso. So much concentration, detail and careful painting has gone into creating their own pieces. Very well done Year 4!

Painting Picasso!

Today Year 4 turned their classroom into an art studio and had a try at painting a picture just like Pablo Picasso! We looked carefully at the angle of the shapes and the colours he used. Everyone was fully engaged in their art work. Well done Year 4 – super work from my superstars!

A new year, a fresh start

Year 4 have come back to school fully ready to engage with their learning. They have been truly amazing, adjusting to new rules and routines exceptionally well. They are enjoying using their writing skills with our wordless book Flotsam, developing place value skills in maths as well as exploring all our new topics in the wider curriculum. What a fantastic start to the new academic year!

Anglo Saxon Living History Day at Carisbrooke Castle

Year 4 had an absolutely brilliant ‘living history experience’ at Carisbrooke Castle yesterday. The event, organised by Isle of Wight Heritage, celebrates the Anglo Saxon period and the Anglo Saxon Treasures exhibition that is currently on display at the Carisbrooke Castle Museum.

The children took part in a range of hands-on activities to help bring the items, that form parts of exhibition, to life.

We enjoyed a storytelling session in the castle chapel, based on Anglo Saxon tales, such as Beowulf.

The children had the opportunity to handle primary sources of historical evidence and learn about the grave of an Anglo Saxon boy that was unearthed within the castle walls.

They were introduced to Anglo Saxon weaponry and armour and got the chance to wear, and handle, some of the heavy weapons, helmets, shields and chain mail.

The children also learnt about how people lived in Anglo Saxon times, had the chance to use feather quills to write in the runic alphabet and got to witness some Anglo Saxon battle re-enactments.

A great big thank you to Estelle and the Isle of Wight Heritage team for a brilliant ‘Living History Day’.
